Change Log

[1.5] - 2016-04-0

  • Hard to read colors in HTML, XHTML, JSP and SQL code completion popups and Apache Conf (.htaccess, .conf) files fixed thank to granella.
  • Baseline alignment of combo boxes fixed thanks to AlexFalappa. Fix for toggle buttons moved to original Darcula library; they should look OK now in GUI designer too.
  • Editor tab colors for 'Same background color from the same project' feature (Tools > Options > Appearance > Document Tabs) adjusted to match Darcula LAF.
  • More color, border and icon enhancements (including background color for tree and tables, border of selected rows, icons in Profiler and C/C++ wizard).
  • For all addressed issues (14) please see Milestone v1.5.

[1.4] - 2016-01-31

  • Fixed hard to read colors in Code Completion popup (hopefully) for all languages.
  • Disabled buttons and labels are easier to read.
  • Fixed default button behavior in dailogs (eg: alt+insert in editor to generate setters and getters).
  • It is safe to use this plugin in any NetBeans platform application now. Level used to log failed attempts to change hardcoded colors is now INFO and so no error dialog will be displayed at startup.
  • It is possible to use icon filter to invert icon colors and switch between stretched and non-stretched tabs in Tools > Options > Appearance > Darcula Look And Feel. Thanks to markiewb for the contribution.
  • Improved icons for JOptionPane, thanks to AlexFalappa and granella.
  • More color, border and icon enhancements (including NetBeans Task/Issue viewer, submenu icons on MAC, Darcula Editor Theme and others).
  • For all addressed issues (27) please see Milestone v1.4.

[1.3] - 2016-01-24

  • Bundled 'Darcula' theme (Tools > Options > Fonts&Colors). Plugin will set theme to Darcula during first restart. Many thanks to granella for the theme and helping with packaging it in plugin.
  • It is possible to specify font type and size within IDE via Tools > Options > Appearance > Darcula Look And Feel. Many thanks to markiewb for implementing this with other font related issues.
  • More color, border and icon enhancements (including diff, versioning colors and FormDesigner guidelines, new Split Pane UI thanks to hudsonb).
  • For all addressed issues (14) please see Milestone v1.3.

[1.2] - 2016-01-19

  • Fixed dark text in Code Completion popup.
  • Removed more harsh white borders (including the ones in Options window and sliding buttons). A few remaining (such as the one in Search Results) are hardcoded and I dont know a good way of patching those.
  • Added a slight margin for buttons.

[1.1] - 2016-01-17

  • Font size issue fixed. It is now possible to use --fontsize switch (either in conf file or command line) to specify desired font size, default size is 12.
  • 'Darcula for NetBeans' is now in 'Preferred look and feel' drop down as requested (Tools > Options > Appearance > Look and Feel). Plugin will set LAF to Darcula during first restart. After that user can switch LAF without uninstalling/disabling the plugin.
  • Colors in Options window match properly with LAF.
  • Many harsh white borders (including the one of search box at top right corner of main window) removed.
  • Contrasting light versions of most core icons provided (close, slide, minimize, restore etc).

Introduction

A NetBeans Look And Feel plugin using Darcula of IntelliJ IDEA.

Many thanks to Konstantin Bulenkov from JetBrains for providing Darcula LAF public at: https://github.com/bulenkov/Darcula. This plugin wraps Darcula LAF library with minor changes and provides required NetBeans specific customizations such as custom UI delegates.

User Comments

This plugin makes me use Netbeans over any other IDE

Netbeans on OS X works well, but its lack of a dark theme that integrated with the OS X menubar kept me from using it.

Thank you for porting this theme over!

Bravo!

Hands down the best dark theme. Thank you for all the attention to detail. This theme is outstanding.
Posted by manica on Mar 16, 2016

Should be the default dark theme!

This theme is clearly made by a guy who spends tons of hours programming and understands what we need.

Compared to the buil-in dark themes (Dark Nimbus and Dark Metal), it's immediately clear how much easier is to see the code and how much more relaxing is coding!

If you compare this with the Norway Today profile (used by Dark Nimbus and Dark Metal) it looks like Norway Today has colours choosen by a random generator whereas Darcula has colors matching the same tone and this is proven very less confusing to the eyes.
E.g. in JS instead of a strong red for "function" and strong white for the name of the function, you have Orange and a lighter orange.

Hyper-strongly suggested!

Now I feel more passionate to code

Thank you very much for the endless effort with this beautiful pluggin.
Keep the good work amd let us contribute to advanced the project further.
To netbeans, thank you for making this as open source.

Low contrast for popup drop-down lists in SQL editor for field names

I just installed this excellent LAF today (NB 8.1) and I must say it's a nice improvement over Dark Metal LAF and Norway Today font & color profile.

My only complaint so far is in the SQL editor when using code completion when working with queries, the drop-down list popup contains low contrast colors for DB table field names: dark background with dark blue font color (for items not currently selected in the list).

Is there a way to change/adjust this dark blue font color using IDE options while a more permanent fix is provided (if provided)? (granted, I have not played much with available options yet, and if I find what I'm looking for, I'll gladly post it here (:D) ).

Then again thank you a lot for this most needed dark LAF.

Wonderful!

Finally a consistent(!) alternative LAF for my favorite IDE.
Great job!

Let's see how it displays the colors in versioning conflicts and coverage reports. Norway Today has some issues in this regard.

Last version

@eric1337 the last version of the plugin will be available when it completes the verification process (see the verification details at the bottom of the two tabs above), currently only one reviser has cast its vote.
To install manually download the *.nbm file, then in NetBeans choose Tools > Plugins, in the Downloaded tab click on Add Plugins... button, choose the downloaded *.nbm file, check the checkbox in the install column and finally press the Install bottom below the list. Follow the installer wizard et voilĂ .

@kowern please open an issue at GitHub describing the observed behaviour and attach a small screenshot

Install 1.4

I am having trouble getting the newest version (1.4) installed. Only 1.3 is available when I look in NetBeans Available Plugins. I downloaded the .bin file in an attempt to install it manually, but after extracting the files, none of them will load in NetBeans Downloaded plugins. Anyone know how to solve this?

The very reason we are not in a cave

@Tommy_Angelo If you look at the amount of issues and suggestions we have all given with regards to improving the LAF, it directly means we are trying to advance this LAF to the point that it is a fantastic user experience, I'm still actively listing suggestions and ideas even though I'm happy with it on the Github page because I want to help in any way I can to make it even better. What I don't appreciate is people who will post a screenshot of Jetbrains, and say, "look they use this font here, so we have to use that font as well." Im 100% on board for the suggestions you made in http://s15.postimg.org/qqym8g8jv/image.png but not for your first mockups that essentially take the tabs directly from jet brains and place them in Netbeans. I think we owe it to ourselves to develop a user experience that is better than Jetbrains, and in doing so, I think we just need to be a bit more creative. So lets just be clear: reprobate !== "suggestion to not copy Jetbrains". By definition, if we are just going to copy them, then they aren't even our ideas.

In any case, I think you should list your current mockup on the issues page on Github if you have not done so already, because I agree with you with regards to making the tabs on a TabComponent match that of the Editor tabs. Did not mean to start a flame war on ideas in any case, just wanted to point out to the community that this is a fine opportunity to make something new and fresh.

Thanks for contributing

No offence

I appreciate very much work of everyone. However I just wanted to have UI look like more polish [for example look at link 1], therefore I picked up this LAF for programming. To be focused more on work than distracting from it.

@dylanv
As you said a lot of people wanted the look of Jetbrains. I do not understand why you are closing your eyes and ears from listening them. Just because you are comfortable with the state as it is now...but for many other are not! If there is a way to enhance something we should try it and not reprobate it. Otherwise we would be still in the cave...think about it.

Can we just talk about something quickly

There have been a lot of people here that are making a lot of comments on both the Github page as well as this thread, that are asking for all these "features/UI Changes" which could in a nutshell be summed up as: "PLEASE COPY JETBRAINS 100%". The idea is to not copy Jetbrains, we are very glad that we were able to get the Darcula look and feel, but this is really a different IDE to jet brains. Furthermore, it just shows a complete lack of originality and design sense to just copy other peoples work 100%. @Tommy_Angelo you are basically asking us to just make Netbeans look identical to Jetbrains? I personally much prefer the tabs that Netbeans has because its much more visible and clear as to which tab is selected. Just because Jetbrains does something does not in any way mean we should automatically just port it over to Netbeans. Can we all just please keep that in mind when we request changes to the LAF /rant

Improvement of UI

Firstly, perfect plugin! But I suggest some improvements to better fit Darcula colours. See mockups gallery:

Now This what you call awesome. Netbeans became much more fun to use with this plugin and this came as an unexpected surprise. Many thanks to you @Revivius.

What a champion!

And with that, I'm essentially close to 100% happy with the way it is now. Thanks a million for taking the time to implement some of the suggestions and ideas. If theres anything that bugs me further, ill give it a go with the source on Github.

@Geertjan
What would it take to make this a standard plugin that comes bundled with Netbeans?
I know many people who have switched to Jetbrains simply because it had a "better" UI. If we can get this somewhere onto the main page, or simply just include with all releases of Netbeans (especially because the plugin is very small in size), I guarantee you people will switch from Eclipse and Jetbrains (and maybe even some text editors like Atom).

Concerning images from "Posted by dylanv on Jan 17, 2016"

Concerning http://i.imgur.com/zupNM1a.png

Without changing the Netbeans sources: In ToggleButtonUI, in the update method, you can do a check for whether the JToggleButton is inside one of the Netbeans SlideBars, and paint the border accordingly, e.g.

if (!isSlideBar()) {
paintBorder(g, c);
}

with

private boolean isSlideBar() { // the bar when one of the dock windows are minimized
// forced to use reflection because of hidden JToggleButton inside WinXPSlidingButtonUI
Class c1 = sun.reflect.Reflection.getCallerClass(5);
if (c1 != null) {
if (c1.getName().endsWith("SlidingButtonUI")) { // org.netbeans.swing.tabcontrol.plaf.WinXPSlidingButtonUI
return true;
} else {
c1 = sun.reflect.Reflection.getCallerClass(6);
if (c1 != null) {
if (c1.getName().endsWith("SlidingButtonUI")) { // org.netbeans.swing.tabcontrol.SlidingButtonUI
return true;
}
}
}
}
return false;
}

Please let me know if you find a better way, because reflections can break if the Netbeans sources change.

Very nice. What about a companion profile

The theme is very nice. I tried "Norway Today" profile (which is the only dark one provided by default). All others are too bright, but even norway is not matching well.

I have adapted "Norway Today" to match Darcula. It is a first draft. If you want I can send it to you?

Gotta go fast

Wow, you move quickly O_O Yeah this is much better. When the borders are removed from most of the elements on dark UI's, they become less distracting (which is usually the biggest issue with dark UI's (yes I'm looking at you Photoshop Update 2015.1 :P ))

I know I'm probably being very hyper critical, and I'm very well aware that most of this cannot be controlled simply by the LAF. But here are some possible things I think we should take a look at that really add quite a bit of polish (obviously only if its possible). In most cases, its usually just some residual borders that are are still present from the IDE's core UI.

I uploaded the images to imgur that highlight some of these:

http://imgur.com/a/DwMXo

Also thanks a million for the quick response TO Geertjan as well as deciding to move the code to Github.

I salute you for once again doing an outstanding job.

Editor theme

This is a very good plugin and works well.
I have two queries related to this:
1. When I activate the plugin, it works except for the editor space. The editor still has netbeans theme. how to apply this LAF to editor space.

2. I have set fontsize to 16 in netbeans conf file, but after activating this plugin that font size doesn't work. How to make that work with this plugin.
Posted by Rahul.khandelwal on Jan 16, 2016

Very good

As previous comments, please, provide your plugin on github so that others users can contribute on it.
Posted by granella on Jan 16, 2016

Very very good

Wow to think we have waited like 10 years for this :D

A few problems and suggestions:

- When using various languages, the colour of the font in the autocomplete drop down box is still black and should rather be a light gray (The javascript and HTML languages work well, but I'm having a lot of problems with PHP)
- The UI still has some places where there are harsh white borders on popup windows, and some UI elements would do well without borders completely, such as the search box in the top right corner of the window.
- The Settings and preferences window in Netbeans still has the old white theme
- The LAF should be in the drop down after the plugin is installed, so that the theme can be switched on and off without having to actually enable and disable the plugin.
- As per the previous comment below this one. We need the ability to adjust font sizes across the IDE.
- We REALLY need some high resolution icons for the editor, as they look horrible with this theme on my Retina Macbook
- Potentially consider having a default dark netbeans syntax theme that is not horrible like every other "dark theme" out there for netbeans.

Ive been working with Swing for many many years, and have built completely new UI themes from scratch and would be willing to assist with some of these changes. For years I have wanted to get involved with creating a significantly better Netbeans user interface, but was not sure where to start. I feel like now however, this would be possible.

-> Can we please get this on Github, so we can all contribute to the plugin (I'm well aware that the URL for the original LAF is there, but where is the NB Plugin source?)

Otherwise many internet points to this project for finally realising a dream that has been on every single netbeans user for years.

IU fonts

Hi. Very good job, thanx. I'm using Android Studio for android projects, so, it's pleasure to see Darcula in Netbeans.

But I have one question. How to change IDE font? 12 size for me is too large.
PS --fontsize in netbeans starting params not working.

Second, can you provide your plugin on github please that others can contribute on it?
