DOAP Bean - plugin detail

Drag and Drop projects onto NetBeans. This is an example of what can be done with semantic web technologies. It is is simple. Easy. Eye opening. But just a very small first step. It was first shown at NetBeans day JavaOne 2007 by Tim Boudreau and Henry Story

Introduction

For a detailed description, heck out the Doap Bean Available blog post.

This project allows you to drag and drop Doap (Description of a Project) files or project URLs that link to such files, from a web site onto the sepcially provided Doap button. NetBeans will then fetch the file, and display information about the project, such as the project's wiki page, bug database location, developer information, mailing list information, etc. etc...

This is a very simple demonstration of the usefulness of working with RDF files.

You can try this out on DoapSpace: http://doapspace.org/
Or on this project's own home page: https://sommer.dev.java.net/

The idea would be then to extend this into something more useful:

  • by getting different components of NetBeans to use this information. Think of having the wiki, the bug database, the source code, etc. find the information...
  • by getting projects to automatically publish Doap files,
  • by linking doap projects together
  • one should also add a progress bar...
  • ...

What's new in this version

Works with NetBeans 6 final. Updated to release candidate 2 of Sesame (openrdf.org)
