Introduction

Installs a Swing-compatible file chooser optimized for keyboard-only users. Performs GNU Readline-style filename completion when you press Tab. Shows available completions in a list for quick reference, similar to Emacs. Also includes a persistent list of recently used directories for extra speed. If you are a mouse user or want normal-looking file choosers, do not use this module.

By having a custom laf class (that just extends the nimbus one) and/or by adding some harmless META-INF/services, I could make the install() called in a static {} block on class loading.
It's hacky but it works with the applications I'm using, without modifying the app code nor yours, just changing the java invocation command.
If people are interested later, I can be contacted by going on heeere.com (I don't know how to monitor this plugin page and get notifications).

Unfortunately I do not know of any declarative way to ask Swing to use a custom component UI... particularly since the QFC version retains the original component UI for the "Classic View" button.

Very good!

For the record, I could actually add the jar with "-Xbootclasspath/a:/.../.netbeans/7.2/modules/org-netbeans-modules-quickfilechooser.jar". The lucky thing is that I wanted to use it for freeplane (a mind mapping software) and it allows to execute scripts (in groovy) so I could install the implementation and it works!

Any chance, we can get rid of the install() call to use it in other applications without touching the source? For example, do you know if there is a META-INF/services or a java property to customize this aspect of swing?

@remi: yes, you can just drop the module JAR into the classpath of your app and call org.netbeans.modules.quickfilechooser.Install.install() to initialize.

Using it outside netbeans

This file chooser is very good. I love it under netbeans. Is there an easy way to use it in any java application, ideally without touching the source code, e.g., by dropping it in as a default JFileChooser implementation?

Classical View button doesn't work

Hi,
I've just tried with NB 7.2 RC1, but the "Classical View" button does nothing (when clicked, the button becomes grayed, but it doesn't restore the classical view). Nothing in NetBeans logs. Is it normal ?

Working for me on OpenJDK

Just tried on Ubuntu 11.10 with

java version "1.7.0_147-icedtea"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea7 2.0) (7~b147-2.0-0ubuntu0.11.10.1)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 21.0-b17, mixed mode)

in NetBeans 7.0.1 on a fresh user directory and installed Quick File Chooser 1.16 from the update center. It seemed to work fine. If you continue to see problems, please file a bug at: https://netbeans.org/bugzilla/enter_bug.cgi?product=contrib&component=Quick%20Filechooser&version=7.0.1

It does not seem to work

Hi,
I it does not seem to work with the following configuration
Ubuntu : 11.10
Netbeans : 7.0.1
OpenJdk : 7 and 6

Works good in 7.0

I use this since 24 hours a lot and I didn't have any problems.

In the plugins list it's listed as a 6.5 Plugin, but it should be "7.0" IMHO.

Bliss for console people

Super-comfortable if you're used to navigate a command-line with auto-completion. Especially handy when navigating deep directory structures. Should be included in the default installation in my opinion. Many thanks for this.
